Childhood Obesity Problems

The growing number of obese children presents a variety of childhood obesity problems. The past years have shown that obesity is increasingly becoming a serious issue among children, as well as among adults. Unfortunately, there is no definite cause or reason why this is happening. However, many believe that poor diet and lack of physical activity play a crucial role in child obesity and obesity in general.

Children nowadays are more interested in the latest video game title than going to the neighborhood playground to play basketball, or the nearest sandlot to play baseball or football. Lack of exercise is contributing to the childhood obesity problems that many among our youths are facing.

Poor diet is also a contributing factor in childhood obesity problems. Although many parents carefully monitor what their kids are eating, they cannot watch them throughout the whole day, especially during lunch in the school cafeteria. Though there are some schools that are now offering healthy and complete meals for their students, there are still a number of schools, however, that provide unhealthy food to the gullible learners.

However, some parents who are not health conscious just let their kids eat anything they want, which is not acceptable nowadays because a lot food out there taste good but do not have nutritional value. Studies have shown that if one or both parents are overweight, there is a great chance that their young ones will become overweight or obese as well. This is a major contributing factor in childhood obesity problems.

The health risks that are associated with childhood obesity includes type II diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, fatty liver disease, high cholesterol, and certain types of cancer. This is why childhood obesity problems should be taken seriously and not indifferently. A child’s physical health is not only the issue here; even the mental health of children, as well as adults, are also at risk. Even though they do not admit it, some, if not most, obese individuals suffer from depression and low self-esteem. Largely because of the way society treats people with weight problems, especially children and teenagers.

The best way to prevent further escalation of childhood obesity problems is to arm ourselves, especially those among us who are parents, with the right knowledge with regards to battling obesity. The key to defeating childhood obesity and obesity in general, is prevention. One way of preventing child obesity is by learning and practicing the healthy way of living. Parents should become good role models to their kids and teach them the importance of healthy food and a healthy lifestyle.
